I see your picture of tiny finger prints you have made,
They are a mixture of colours, of no specific thing,
But I know deep down that one day they will fade.
I see your finger prints upon our windows and walls,
Even though I may complain,
I know that soon I will no longer hear your calls.
I see your tiny foot prints all over the floor,
They are in the flour you have spilt,
Although there will come a time when I hear them no more.
I see your tiny foot prints of water in the garden,
Daddy may complain you have left the tap on again,
But he too knows that soon we will be released of this burden.
I see your toys all over our house,
I may even curse when I trip, stumble or fall over them,
However, there will be a day when it is just me and my spouse.
I see you being defiant and a naughty boy,
Sometimes you make me so angry and cross,
One day that will all be forgotten and I will just remember the joy.
I see you come home from school and not telling me about your day,
I hope that you talk more soon because,
There will come a time when you will have to move away.
I see you staring at a screen and all I get is a moan,
We roll our eyes and hope it will not last,
For things will change, when you must face the world alone.
I see you go out with friends without a goodbye,
There is no sleep for me until your safe return,
You are now becoming independent, I can’t help but cry.
I see you with your head in study books and looking so confused,
We help you the best we can, knowing that you will find a way,
Before I know it, I notice how much you have improved.
I see you at you at your graduation,
Me and your Dad swell inside with pride,
But then the thought dawns, it’s now time for our separation.
I see you marry and once again we are filled with pride,
We wish you all the happiness in the world my son,
Now go and enjoy life with your beautiful wife by your side.
I see you with a son of your own.
I see you complain about fingerprints with a moan.
I see you curse, trip and fall.
I see you roll your eyes when he calls.
I stop you and say
These are delicate fingers and toes
Touch them, kiss them, quickly, before he grows.
