Book review – Healers of Highley Woods

I just want to share with you a quick review on a book written by my dear friend Jean Turner. As some of you know I am an aspiring writer and when time permits I am found pondering over a new story or article idea. I met Jean earlier this year at an event at Exeter College celebrating adults learners. We had both attended Creative Writing classes on separate days and our tutor introduced us. During the event our tutor Sam Watson, read an excerpt from Jeans book which had not long been published – self published I would like to add. My fellow students and I were impressed and couldn’t wait to get our hands on our own copy. This then became my night-time reading. So here is what I thought of it.

Jeans writing style makes for easy reading, so this is a good book to curl up under the duvet with. The plot itself is full of mystery, magic and family life. The story is based in the mid to late 1800’s, now personally I tend to shy away from books with this type of genre, but I was intrigued by the plot and it had been written by a fellow writer friend. However Jean manages to make reading about this time a pleasure and almost seem modern. The main characters are women – a mother and her two daughters. Each of them possess similar psychic and healing powers. The story covers their struggles, times of love and personal growth. You can’t help but feel attached to them and with Jeans descriptions you feel as if you are experiencing their lives with them. The ending is satisfying but I am not going to go in to too much detail, you will just have to find out for yourself.

This book is a short read consisting of 223 pages, so is an excellent holiday read. So if you are looking for an easy to read book full of mystery, magic, love and some drama to spice it up a bit then this is for you.

I would also like to congratulate Jean on her first novel, I know that our tutor, our writers club friends and myself are very proud of you. Well done. x
